The flaxen-colored mare was one of the most beautiful horses Ruth ever saw. She brushed the animal, awed that it was now hers. The long off-white tail and mane were striking. “She de mos’ wonerful horse I ever seed. How kin ya part wit her?”

“Golden Gal was Ephraim’s horse, his favorite one, en seein’ her keeps up too much memories. Ya love horses en well … I thought ya like havin one a ya’ own. I’s too old ta be tending ta mo’ den I need. Two ta ride or pull the wagon is plenty fo’ me. I think Ephraim would be happy fo’ ya ta have his Golden Gal.”

“I promise, I take real good care of her.”

“I know you will, jes like ya takes good care a Bo.” Ruth looked at Naomi sideways, then dropped her head. “Somethin’ wrong ’tween you and Bo?” Naomi asked.

Ruth sighed and stopped brushing. “I ain’t deservin’ a such a good man like Bo. I knows I ain’t.”

“Ya talkin’ foolish. Course ya deserve him. He chose ya, didn’t he?”

“He didn’t know who he was choosin’ when he did.”

“I think he did. He married who de Lawd tol’ him ta pick … you.”

“I doubt de Lawd would pick me for anything.”

“Bo tol’ me God tol’ him ya be his wife.”

“I ain’t the right woman for Bo. Maybe … maybe he shoulda married Mara instead.”

“Mara? What brought all dis bout?”

“I’s not who he thinks I is. I done things, wicked things en …”

“We all got a pass, chile—all a us—en we all needs forgiveness. Dat’s why Jesus come en die so we kin be forgiven fo’ our sins.”

“Dis got nuttin’ ta do wit Jesus.” Ruth rolled her eyes.

“But ya wrong. Everything got somethin’ ta do wit de Lawd.” Naomi took Ruth’s trembling hands. “Whatever ya think makes ya unfit, give it ta de Lawd. He kin forgive ya. Den take it to Bo en he kin forgive ya too.”

Tears welled in Ruth’s eyes. “Nobody kin fo’give what I did … nobody.”

“Jesus kin.”

Ruth began to weep on Naomi’s shoulder. “Not even yo Jesus, not de evil I did.”

“Now ya jes calm down en tell me what ya talkin’ bout.”

“I cain’t … you would hate me en never fo’give me. I cain’t talk bout it cause I cain’t fo’give myself. Dats why I don’t deserve ta be so happy.”

“Tell it ta de Lawd. Ya gotta learn to unload yo’ burdens on de Lawd. If ya don’t, ya won’t never have no peace.” Naomi gently raised Ruth’s face up. “Tell it ta Jesus. Ask Him ta be Lawd of ya life, chile.”

“But I’m not sure I believe in yo’ Jesus.”

“Pray fo’ faith enough ta believe.”

“Is it dat easy?”

“It kin be.”

“How kin ya keep believin’ after Ephraim?”

“It broke my heart ta pieces ta lose my man like dat but I still believes in de Lawd. If it weren’t fer de Lawd, I never git o’er it … never. Jesus give me strength nuff ta go on. He gives me calm in de worse a times.
